How to Choose the Right Bi-fold Door Style for Your Home

Bi-fold doors can be a great choice for any home, if you want to open up a space to the patio or deck area, or just to your property's backyard or side yard. Bi-fold doors give you more control over how much of the doorway will be open, as you can fold up the entire section of doors for maximum light and airflow, or open just a few door sections as needed. When you're ready to have bi-fold doors installed in your home, note a few simple but important tips for choosing the best style and material, and this will ensure you find the best doors for your home's interior and exterior spaces.

Frameless glass

Frameless glass is best if you have a nice view to the outside of your home, as these glass panels won't allow that view to be obstructed; however, this also means lots of sunlight getting into the home and little privacy inside. You might want to be prepared to have sheers or other lightweight curtains installed in front of the doors or individual blinds or shades installed over each door panel so that you can control that sunlight and its resultant heat. These window treatments will also provide privacy when needed.

Aluminium versus wood

If you do opt for doors with frames, you'll need to decide between wood or aluminium. Aluminium is much lighter and may be good for those who would struggle to open a heavy wood door. It's also impervious to termites and won't need to be re-coated over the years.

Since any metal can hold heat and cold, wood may be a better choice in extreme climates and especially in areas with lots of hot, direct sunlight, as this light can also make the metal uncomfortably hot. If you do choose wood, be sure to opt for a species or shade that will coordinate with the home's decking or interior furniture.

Type of glass

Whether you choose a frame or not, you'll need to decide on the type of glass you want for your bi-fold doors. Opt for a thick, toughened glass if you live in an area with frequent storms, as this will ensure the glass won't get chipped or cracked from flying debris, and won't shatter from strong winds.  Double-paned glass on your bi-fold doors can be more expensive, but can also mean better insulation against heat, cold and even sound. If you have nearby neighbours or live near a busy roadway, choose double-paned glass doors for added quiet.
