Two misconceptions many homeowners have about security features

Here are two misconceptions that a lot of homeowners have about security features.

They think there's no point getting security doors if they cannot also get security windows

Many homeowners cannot add security features, such as security grilles, to their windows, due to the condition or style of their windows or because their home has many windows and the costs of adding this feature to all of them would be prohibitive. Some of these homeowners then choose not to get the security doors they want, need and can afford for their homes because they think that if they're not paired with security windows, these doors won't protect their homes. This is not correct.

The reason for this is that when contemplating the choice of breaking into a home through one of the locked doors or one of the locked windows, burglars will normally select the former. This is because picking a door lock is a much quieter process than smashing a window (which means people in and around the home are less likely to hear the door-picking burglar) and will also not leave the burglar covered in wounds, in the way that climbing through a smashed window would.

As such, whenever a burglar approaches a house or apartment, they'll normally try to pick its door locks first. If when doing this they realise that they're trying to open security doors, whose locks are almost impossible to pick, they won't necessarily then try the windows, but will just leave, as they'll assume that the windows are equally well-secured or will not want to take the risk that would come with loudly breaking into the building through one of them.

They think that features like security doors and window grilles will make their homes look unattractive and intimidating

The other misconception that some homeowners have is that if they secure their homes with security doors, their neighbours and those that visit their homes will then think the properties look unattractive and intimidating. If a homeowner values the beauty of their home and wants to maintain that beauty, this might make them reluctant to get these doors and other security items.

Whilst certain styles of security grilles on windows can sometimes have this effect, only those who have done very little research into security doors are likely to believe that these doors will cause this issue. The reason for this is that people who have, for example, taken a look at the security doors that are available for residential properties will know that many of them are indistinguishable from doors that have minimal security features, in terms of how they look. In many cases, it's only apparent that a door is a security door when a person goes to use its locks (or when a burglar tries, and cannot manage to pick those locks). As such, no homeowner who feels that their home needs better security should allow this concern to put them off getting security doors.
